Dickinson adds 152 new virus cases

Local health officials Monday afternoon reported 152 new COVID-19 positives in Dickinson County since Friday, along with a 25th virus-related death.

Iron County added 27 new cases as well, according to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department.

The DIDHD on Monday listed Dickinson County at 1,048 confirmed positives and 41 probable cases, with 328 recovered, 25 deaths and 736 cases still active. Iron County has had 536 confirmed cases and 35 probables, with 297 recovered, 25 deaths and 249 cases still active.

In the face of the sharp and prolonged rise in cases, further hampered by reporting delays from local providers, the DIDHD advised Monday the situation “is now exceeding their capacity to do timely contact tracing” on new COVID-19 positives.

The DIDHD in a news release stated, “If you have been notified that you have tested positive for coronavirus, please maintain your isolation as directed by your provider for 10 days beyond your onset of symptoms.”

They stressed, “It is also vital that you identify your close contacts (anyone who was within 6 feet of you for longer than 15 minutes in a 24-hour timeframe) and notify them as soon as possible. If you are contacted and notified that you are a close contact to a positive case, please self-quarantine yourself for 14 days and monitor yourself for symptoms regularly. If you are interested in getting tested, please go to www.michigan.gov/coronavirus to find a testing location near you.”

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department, based in Hancock, issued a similar advisory Monday about contact tracing.

“Over the past three weeks, more than 750 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified across Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, placing a significant strain on resources,” the department posted on social media. “Even with assistance from partner organizations, capacity has been reached and WUPHD is notifying residents that individuals who test positive (and their close contacts) may not receive a call from the health department.”

The state’s COVID-19 data site indicated 357 confirmed new positives since Saturday across the Upper Peninsula’s 15 counties: 142 in Marquette County, 66 in Delta County, 24 in Dickinson County, 22 in Gogebic County, 20 in Houghton County, 18 in Iron County, 15 in Menominee County, 14 in Baraga County, 12 in Ontonagon County, seven in Chippewa County, five in Alger County, four in Mackinac County, three in Luce and Schoolcraft counties, and two in Keweenaw County.
