Iron County renews millages; Dickinson OKs benefits assistance

Millage renewals in Iron County had strong support in election returns Tuesday night, with all proposals approved.

The renewals include 0.15 mills, or 15 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, to maintain advanced life support ambulance service throughout the county; O.27 mills, or 27 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for the operation of all senior centers; and 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for road maintenance, repair and reconstruction.

A proposed Meals on Wheels levy in Iron County also received wide support. The proposed levy was 0.1 mills, or 10 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, to provide and deliver meals for individuals age 60 or older.

Also on the ballot was a health care benefits assistance of 0.1 mills, or 10 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, to help support professional assistance for individuals and families in obtaining Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drugs, affordable health insurance and other related health care benefits. That millage was approved by the closest margin among those on the ballot, 3,454 yes to 2,612 no.

A similar health care benefits assistance millage was on the ballot in Dickinson County where it was also approved, 6,273 yes to 5,742 no.

A Crystal Falls District Library millage renewal of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, was supported by a wide margin in the city of Crystal Falls as well as Mansfield Township and Crystal Falls Township.

A proposed Crystal Falls Township fire station bond proposal was approved, 527 to 329.

In contested local races in Tuesday’s election, Ann Martin regained her Dickinson County Board seat in District 2, defeating incumbent Democrat Kevin Pirlot, who has served the past two years after besting Martin in 2018.
