State lists 38 new virus cases in UP for weekend

State health officials reported almost 40 new confirmed COVID-19 positives in the Upper Peninsula and one new virus-related death since Saturday.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department did not update local figures Monday, given the Presidents’ Day holiday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday showed 38 new confirmed positives in the U.P. since Friday: 18 in Houghton County; eight in Delta County; six in Gogebic County; three in Marquette County; two in Baraga County; and one each in Ontonagon, Alger and Chippewa counties. The state reduced Keweenaw County’s count by two. Baraga County had the region’s single new death.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Monday has had 16,209 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 377 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Monday had Keweenaw County at 108 confirmed cases and 26 probable, and one death and one probable death; Luce County, 132 confirmed cases and 82 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 229 confirmed cases and 28 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 276 confirmed, 155 probable and one death, two probable; Mackinac County, 279 confirmed cases and 151 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 354 confirmed, 51 probable and 18 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 501 confirmed cases, 97 probable and 32 deaths; Chippewa County, 708 confirmed cases and 1,010 probable, and 20 deaths, four probable; Iron County, 863 confirmed cases and 62 probable, 39 confirmed deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 903 confirmed cases and 335 probable, 18 confirmed deaths and 28 probable; Menominee County, 1,606 confirmed cases, 257 probable and 35 deaths, two probable; Houghton County, 2,053 confirmed cases, 505 probable, 32 confirmed deaths and eight probable; Dickinson County, 2,118 confirmed cases and 236 probable, 55 confirmed deaths and 14 probable; Delta County, 2,639 confirmed cases and 461 probable, 65 confirmed deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,440 confirmed cases, 491 probable and 54 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS posted 852 confirmed new COVID-19 positives in Michigan on Saturday and 1,265 on Monday for a total of 575,489. The state added 88 new deaths Saturday — including 84 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — and eight deaths Monday to reach 15,158.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site from Saturday through Monday had 12 new confirmed positives in Vilas County, five in Marinette County, two in Iron County, and one each in Florence and Forest counties.

The DHS on Monday had Marinette County with 3,954 confirmed cases, 378 probable cases and 61 deaths, two probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,065 confirmed, 118 probable and 36 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 918 confirmed, 69 probable and 23 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 516 confirmed, 116 probable and 19 deaths, 19 probable; and Florence County, 431 confirmed, 34 probable and 12 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin added 752 new positives Saturday, 503 on Sunday and 405 on Monday for a total of 555,708 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state posted 10 new deaths Saturday, one Sunday and four Monday to reach 6,166.
