UP surpasses 16,000 coronavirus cases
The Upper Peninsula has surpassed 16,000 confirmed COVID-19 positives, according to Michigan’s coronavirus data site, even as the daily average in the state and region continues to trend downward.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday added a total of 27 new confirmed cases in the Upper Peninsula: six each in Houghton and Ontonagon counties; four each in Dickinson, Delta and Marquette counties; and two in Menominee and Gogebic counties; the state also reduced Chippewa County’s virus count by one. Menominee and Ontonagon counties each recorded one new death attributed to COVID-19.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Thursday had Keweenaw County at 105 confirmed cases and 26 probable, and one death and one probable death; Luce County, 130 confirmed cases and 75 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 228 confirmed cases and 28 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 274 confirmed, 155 probable and one death, two probable; Mackinac County, 278 confirmed cases and 147 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 343 confirmed, 45 probable and 18 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 491 confirmed cases, 94 probable and 31 deaths; Chippewa County, 703 confirmed cases and 1,006 probable, and 20 deaths, four probable; Iron County, 856 confirmed cases and 62 probable, 39 confirmed deaths and eight probable; Gogebic County, 868 confirmed cases and 327 probable, 18 confirmed deaths and 27 probable; Menominee County, 1,597 confirmed cases, 256 probable and 34 deaths, two probable; Houghton County, 2,008 confirmed cases, 485 probable, 32 confirmed deaths and seven probable; Dickinson County, 2,104 confirmed cases and 236 probable, 55 confirmed deaths and 14 probable; Delta County, 2,621 confirmed cases and 458 probable, 63 confirmed deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,416 confirmed cases, 489 probable and 53 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Thursday has had 16,022 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 372 deaths.
The MDHHS on Thursday listed 1,358 confirmed new COVID-19 positives in Michigan for a total of 565,251. The state added 74 new deaths — including 63 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — to reach 14,778.
For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Thursday had seven new confirmed positives in Iron County, four in Marinette County, three in Vilas County and one in Florence County; the state lowered Forest County’s number of positives by one.
The DHS on Thursday had Marinette County with 3,921 confirmed cases, 373 probable cases and 61 deaths, two probable deaths; Vilas County, 1,985 confirmed, 111 probable and 32 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 912 confirmed, 69 probable and 22 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 483 confirmed, 112 probable and 19 deaths, 18 probable; and Florence County, 428 confirmed, 35 probable and 12 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
Wisconsin added 1,890 new positives Thursday for a total of 546,955 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state posted 41 new deaths Thursday to reach 5,992.
For a second day the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department did not update local numbers.
The DIDHD on Tuesday had Dickinson County at 2,102 confirmed positives and 238 probable cases, with 2,136 recovered, 67 deaths and 137 cases still active. For Iron County, the DIDHD had 856 confirmed cases and 64 probables, with 791 recovered, 44 deaths and 85 still active.
