State figures for UP virus cases rise by only six but with three more deaths

The state Thursday added a net of six more confirmed COVID-19 positives in the Upper Peninsula along with new deaths in three counties after a records review.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Thursday indicated eight new cases in the Upper Peninsula: two in Houghton County; and one each in Menominee, Delta, Marquette, Luce, Ontonagon and Baraga counties. But the state lowered Keweenaw County’s count by two, resulting in a net rise of six cases in the region. The new coronavirus-related deaths came in Marquette, Alger and Luce counties.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Thursday has had 20,005 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 435 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Thursday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 32 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 224 confirmed cases and 254 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 321 confirmed, 194 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 352 confirmed cases and 83 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 417 confirmed, 60 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 452 confirmed cases and 253 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 688 confirmed cases, 125 probable and 37 deaths; Iron County, 983 confirmed cases and 69 probable, 43 deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 1,040 confirmed cases and 364 probable, 22 deaths and 28 probable; Chippewa County, 1,079 confirmed cases and 1,394 probable, and 28 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,791 confirmed cases, 329 probable and 41 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,398 confirmed cases and 340 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,527 confirmed cases, 607 probable, 34 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,342 confirmed cases and 712 probable, 75 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,249 confirmed cases, 819 probable and 61 deaths, one probable. State figures are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Thursday posted 510 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total to date of 889,551. The state Thursday had 57 deaths attributed to the virus — including 62 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, which along with other corrections made to data resulted in a net count of 57 deaths, according to the MDHHS — to reach 19,266.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Thursday had only two new confirmed positives, both in Marinette County. A new death was recorded in Vilas County.

The DHS on Thursday had Marinette County with 4,227 confirmed cases, 476 probable cases and 66 deaths, six probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,283 confirmed, 146 probable and 41 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 963 confirmed, 79 probable and 23 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 582 confirmed, 120 probable and 21 deaths, 19 probable; and Florence County, 451 confirmed, 55 probable and 13 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin on Thursday added 165 new positives for a total of 610,565 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state posted 19 new deaths Thursday to reach 7,129.
