Dickinson backs state gas tax suspension
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Board is backing state legislation that would pause Michigan’s gasoline and diesel fuel taxes, offering at least some savings for motorists as prices continue to climb.
“I think we should all be in support of this,” Commissioner Joe Stevens said during Monday’s board meeting, noting revenues denied to road agencies and municipalities would be made up through the state’s general fund.
As proposed, the suspension would be from now through mid-September, though the measure could undergo changes as it moves through the Legislature.
In March, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vetoed legislation to suspend the state’s 27.2-cents per gallon tax from April through September, saying it would deprive funding needed for road repairs.
The House is now considering legislation passed by the Senate in May that would suspend both the state gas tax and the 6% sales tax on gasoline.
Negotiations with Whitmer are ongoing, according to the nonprofit news organization Bridge Michigan.
Under the new bills, $300 million would go to local governments and road commissions to offset lost revenues. A potential hangup, however, is that nearly $3 of every $4 in sales tax goes to schools. The legislation before the House provides no mechanism to offset those lost funds.
The county board’s support for a pause in taxes mentions only the state gas and diesel fuel tax of 27.2 cents per gallon.
The resolution, which passed unanimously, had been forwarded by Schoolcraft County.
In other action, the county board:
— Denied, in a 3-2 vote, a request from Lake Antoine Association to provide $2,000 to help control invasive Eurasian milfoil. A year ago, the county gave $3,000, but Chairman Henry Wender said it should be considered a one-time donation since most of the treatment area was near the county’s boat landing. The no votes came from Wender and commissioners John Degenaer Jr. and Barbara Kramer. There is disagreement on whether milfoil assistance should go only to Lake Antoine and whether milfoil requests must be part of the board’s annual budget process. An earlier motion to provide $1,000 to the Lake Antoine Association failed 4-1, with Commissioner Joe Stevens voting yes.
— Approved a $100,000 appropriation to Sagola Township for paving and culvert replacement on Herzog Road. The money will come from the county’s $4.9 million share of federal American Rescue Plan funds. Total cost is $280,669. Dickinson County Road Commission is paying $56,631 and the township an additional $124,038.
— After meeting in closed session, agreed to close the courthouse Monday in observance of Juneteenth, which was added June 1 by the Michigan Supreme Court to the official list of court holidays specified in court rules. Circuit Court Chief Judge Mary Barglind and Probate Judge Thomas Slagle joined the discussion, as the closure has implications for agreements with the county’s collective bargaining units.
