Rochon new Dickinson undersheriff; board salutes Metras as he retires
IRON MOUNTAIN — Aaron Rochon, who has served as Dickinson County’s road patrol lieutenant since 2017, will be the county’s new undersheriff, Sheriff Scott Rutter said.
Rochon has been with the sheriff’s department for 22 years. He succeeds Scott Metras, who is retiring after more than 32 years with the department, the past 5 1/2 as undersheriff.
At a county board meeting Monday, Rutter was authorized to fill vacancies created by Metras’ retirement and Rochon’s promotion.
“A lot of sacrifices made,” Rutter said of Metras’ extensive service, which has included time as a road patrol deputy, road lieutenant and detective lieutenant.
The board passed a resolution saluting Metras, who has been a member of the KIND drug enforcement team, a hostage negotiator, firearms trainer, Michigan Sheriffs’ Association internal affairs investigator and a member and coordinator of the Critical Incident Response Team. The board credited Metras for working tirelessly to advance law enforcement efforts.
“Under his leadership, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office has provided highly technical, specialized and exemplary service to the residents of Dickinson County, and worked in conjunction with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies,” the resolution states.
In other action, the board:
— Adopted a resolution honoring the service of Samantha Neuens as Breitung Township clerk since November 2020. Neuens has “provided invaluable insight, commitment and guidance for her community” and “was always a source of wisdom for any clerk that needed assistance, willing to go out of her way to help,” the resolution notes.
— In a 3-2 vote, appointed Mari Negro to a partial term on the Northpointe Behavioral Health Board to expire March 31, 2025. Negro has represented Menominee County on the panel for more than a decade but has now moved to Norway in Dickinson County. The other applicant was Wendy Mattia of Vulcan. Negro was supported by commissioners John Degenaer Jr., Barbara Kramer and Ann Martin while Chairman Henry Wender and Commissioner Joe Stevens voted for Mattia.
— Approved Jessica Gartland and Lindsay Kuenzer as new 95B District Court deputy magistrates.
— Accepted a request from the Dickinson County Area Band to host community concerts at the Lake Antoine Park bandshell on June 29, July 4, July 13, July 20 and July 27.
— Denied a request from James Morrow to overrule the Fumee Lake Commission and open the gates to the snowmobile trail through the Fumee Lake Natural Area for a planned Lone Wolf Gravel Race bicycle event this fall. Volunteers would be stationed at the gates, Morrow said.
