Storms roll through region; tornado reported in Marinette County
The heat wave is thought to have triggered severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening into the night in northeastern Wisconsin and the central and eastern Upper Peninsula, including a report of a confirmed tornado in Marinette County.
A tornado warning was issued for northern Marinette County after the National Weather Service office in Green Bay stated that at 6:36 p.m. Central time a tornado was confirmed 9 miles northeast of the McCaslin Mountain State Natural Area, roughly 27 miles south of Kingsford.
Roughly 30 minutes later, Dickinson and Menominee counties were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning as the same system moved northeast.
Emergency scanner traffic indicated trees and power lines down across numerous roadways throughout the region due to storms and possible tornado activity.
The NWS had a tornado watch in place until midnight Central time this morning for Dickinson, Iron and Menominee counties plus Florence and Marinette counties in Wisconsin; as well as Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette and Schoolcraft counties in the U.P.
As of 9 p.m., We Energies reported power outages affecting 49,000 customers in southeast Wisconsin, the Fox Valley and the Upper Peninsula. Those outages included 835 in Iron County, 733 in Menominee County and 82 in Dickinson County. In Wisconsin, We Energies listed 733 outages in Marinette County and 85 in Florence County.
Wisconsin Public Service, meanwhile, was dealing with 126 outages in Marinette County.
