State data indicates upswing in area virus activity
State data Tuesday showed a rise in virus activity in the area for the week.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday recorded 27 new confirmed positives in Dickinson County since Dec. 27, up 13 from the previous week. Iron County had 21 new confirmed cases, seven more than the week before.
The MDHHS website Tuesday added 208 confirmed positives since Dec. 27 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 42 in Menominee County; 31 in Delta County; 27 in Dickinson County; 25 in Marquette County; 21 in Iron County; 14 in Houghton County; 11 in Gogebic County; 10 in Schoolcraft and Baraga counties; five in Luce County; and four in Chippewa, Ontonagon and Alger counties.
The state listed only one new confirmed death in the Upper Peninsula since Dec. 27, in Delta County, which leads the region in virus-related deaths at 145.
Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 62,612 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 955 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 576 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 772 confirmed cases and 877 probable, 16 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,171 confirmed, 138 probable and 41 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,266 confirmed, 819 probable and eight deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,359 confirmed cases and 820 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,932 confirmed cases and 1,011 probable, 33 deaths and five probable; Baraga County, 2,104 confirmed cases, 443 probable and 56 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,094 confirmed cases and 397 probable, 82 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,543 confirmed cases and 684 probable, 44 deaths and 33 probable; Chippewa County, 4,103 confirmed cases and 5,964 probable, and 98 deaths, 19 probable; Menominee County, 4,794 confirmed cases, 2,162 probable and 64 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 6,157 confirmed cases and 3,087 probable, 102 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,154 confirmed cases, 1,231 probable, 94 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,016 confirmed cases and 3,225 probable, 145 deaths and 36 probable; and Marquette County, 14,571 confirmed cases, 4,145 probable and 144 deaths, 17 probable.
The MDHHS on Tuesday had 9,793 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Dec. 27, or an average of about 1,399 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 2,998,447 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Dec. 27 added 69 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 40,836.
The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.
For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,175 COVID-19 positives so far, up 47 since Dec. 28, and 148 deaths, up one; Vilas County, 6,377 positives, up 11, and 103 deaths; Forest County, 3,281 positives, up 10, and 54 deaths; Iron County, 1,782 positives, up one, and 49 deaths; and Florence County, 1,329 positives, up seven, and 17 deaths.
