State data shows new virus death in Iron County

Iron County had a new death blamed on COVID-19 in the past week, even as virus cases appeared to decline in the area, according to state data.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday recorded 22 new confirmed positives in Dickinson County since Jan. 3, down five from the previous week. Iron County had 10 new confirmed cases, 11 fewer than the week before.

The MDHHS website Tuesday added 167 confirmed positives since Jan. 3 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 33 in Marquette County, 29 in Menominee County, 25 in Delta County, 22 in Dickinson County, 13 in Houghton County, 10 in Iron County, eight in Baraga and Gogebic counties, six in Alger County, five in Schoolcraft County, four in Keweenaw County, two in Chippewa County and one each in Ontonagon and Luce counties.

New deaths attributed to COVID-19 included two in Delta County and one apiece in Iron and Menominee counties.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 62,779 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 959 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 580 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 773 confirmed cases and 878 probable, 16 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,172 confirmed, 140 probable and 41 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,272 confirmed, 820 probable and eight deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,364 confirmed cases and 820 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,932 confirmed cases and 1,020 probable, 33 deaths and five probable; Baraga County, 2,112 confirmed cases, 445 probable and 56 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,104 confirmed cases and 416 probable, 83 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,551 confirmed cases and 690 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,105 confirmed cases and 5,969 probable, and 98 deaths, 19 probable; Menominee County, 4,823 confirmed cases, 2,166 probable and 65 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 6,179 confirmed cases and 3,092 probable, 102 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,167 confirmed cases, 1,232 probable, 94 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,041 confirmed cases and 3,239 probable, 147 deaths and 36 probable; and Marquette County, 14,604 confirmed cases, 4,171 probable and 144 deaths, 18 probable.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 9,814 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Jan. 3, or an average of about 1,402 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,008,261 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Jan. 3 added 165 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 41,001.

The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,218 COVID-19 positives so far, up 43 since Jan. 3, and 148 deaths; Vilas County, 6,400 positives, up 23, and 106 deaths, up three; Forest County, 3,291 positives, up 10, and 54 deaths; Iron County, 1,788 positives, up six, and 49 deaths; and Florence County, 1,333 positives, up four, and 17 deaths.
