Breitung Township to solicit bids on used fire tanker

QUINNESEC — Breitung Township will look to sell its used fire tanker after obtaining a new truck earlier this year.

The tanker is a 1990 Mack truck that will be sold as is, by sealed bid, as it does show signs of a tank leak.

Values for similar vehicles range from $20,000 to $35,000 and the township board this week approved a minimum bid of $12,000.

The board also approved the sale, by sealed bid, of a Toro leaf mulcher mower. A minimum bid of $300 was approved.

The board received one bid of $6,145.88 from Roland Machinery of Escanaba for the purchase of a pneumatic piercing tool, which would allow for tunneling under streets when installing water lines. With Public Works Superintendent Jason Davis and Township Superintendent Steve Mulka not in attendance, the bid was tabled and will be revisited.

In other action Monday, the board:

— Discussed forming a committee for the township’s upcoming sesquicentennial in 2026. It was noted that Kingsford began planning for its centennial celebration at least three years in advance. It was also noted that if more than three people from the board were to serve on the committee, formal meetings would need to be conducted. Trustees Paul Taff and Aaron Rochon and Supervisor Denny Olson were approved to serve on the committee. Other interested persons should contact the township or the trustees about volunteering.

— Heard Fire Chief Jim Rose report on department activities. Firefighters were involved in Camp 911 where students in fourth through sixth grade were able to witness demonstrations of a crash extrication, as well putting out a stove fire with an extinguisher.

The Upper Peninsula Firefighters Tournament is at the end of July and the Breitung Township Fire Department will likely send some members to compete or at least attend a meeting of the association.

Finally, Rose said he is working on the application process to get five deceased members on the Michigan Firefighters Memorial Wall, with this year’s ceremony set for Sept. 16 in Roscommon.
