Florida man arrested after 2-county chase

MENOMINEE — A 35-mile pursuit through Dickinson and Menominee counties ended with the arrest Wednesday night of a 53-year-old Florida man on a rural two-track road in Nadeau Township, authorities said.

No one was injured during the chase, which began on U.S. 2 in Dickinson County at about 7:55 p.m. and reached speeds in excess of 80 mph, Menominee County Sheriff Mike Holmes stated in a Facebook post. The suspect, who has ties to the area, was in Menominee County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding.

After the pursuit began, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from Menominee County in placing “stop sticks.” After successfully evading multiple sets of stop sticks in Dickinson County, the pursuit entered Menominee County at about 8:06 p.m., Holmes said.

The driver avoided another stop-stick checkpoint near Powers, then headed south on U.S. 41 and traveled a number of county roads before finally coming to a stop. He was taken into custody without incident, Holmes said.

Other agencies involved were Iron Mountain Police Department, Michigan State Police, Hannahville Tribal Police Department, Dickinson County Central Dispatch and Menominee County 911.

The suspect’s name was being withheld pending arraignment.
