Gaastra receives state grant for new technology, software

The city of Gaastra will receive a $59,600 grant to upgrade technology equipment and software, the Michigan Department of Treasury said.

The money was awarded this week through the Financially Distressed Cities, Villages and Townships Grant Program.

Statewide, 13 municipalities will get $2.8 million in funding, the treasury department said in a news release.

For fiscal year 2024, the Michigan Legislature appropriated $2.5 million, with a carryover of $264,000 from the previous fiscal year. The FDCVT Grant Program has a $2 million cap per municipality and grants are awarded based on the applications submitted.

In the Upper Peninsula, the village of Calumet and the village of Ontonagon also received funds. The Calumet grants are among the largest statewide — $247,500 for infrastructure replacement at the public works building and $323,450 for infrastructure replacement at the village hall.

The Ontonagon grants are for public works equipment — $149,126 to replace a backhoe and $275,000 to replace a motor grader.

The grants fund specific projects, services, or strategies, including infrastructure and public safety enhancements, that move a city, village, or township toward financial stability, said State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks.

Eligibility is defined in Michigan’s Local Financial Stability and Choice Act of 2012, which was adopted to assist municipalities experiencing probable financial distress.
