Back to the Present

The Daily News is bringing back photos of “yesteryears.” Each week, an historical photograph will be posted on The Daily News’ Facebook page. Readers will be asked to identify the location, as well as share a memorable experience of the location. “Back to the present” will then be published in the Wednesday edition, including a current photo. Readers can comment on The Daily News’ Facebook page, or email tcastelaz@ironmountaindailynews.com with subject “Back to the present.”

This week’s Back to the Present photograph, provided by the Florence County Historical Society, is a 1929 view of the State Bank of Florence at 541 Central Ave.

The bank was founded in January 1891, and was incorporated under the laws of the State of Wisconsin, with a paid-in capital stock of $15,000. The first officers were President O.C. Davidson and Vice President H. D. Fisher.

Its first location in the community was on Central Avenue Block 22.

The bank was in need of additional room and in 1929 a new bank was constructed one block to the west of the original location. The building with offices on the second floor was describes as “a modern structure comprising fire proof construction throughout. The building, 32- by 68-feet in size, with concrete basement is built of brick, cement and steel. The vault, with its heavy armor plate door and heavy reinforced walls are a guarantee of safe protection.”

In 2003, the State Bank completed a remodeling of the structure and placed an addition providing needed office space, drive-though and ATM availability.

The following year, the State Bank of Florence celebrated the opening of its Aurora Financial Center Branch.

In 2017, the State Bank of Florence was renamed to Great North Bank. The name change, according to bank officials, better reflects the growth of the brand and expansion of banking services across the northern region.

The second photo

is a view of Great North Bank today that continues to serve the community and surrounding area.

Three generations of the Wittkopf family has had ownership of the independent community bank.
