‘May the Fourth be with you’

The Braumart to again host ‘Star Wars’ event with movie screenings Saturday

IT’S TIME TO feel the force. The Braumart in Iron Mountain invites “Star Wars” fans to its second-annual “May the Fourth be with you” celebration on Saturday. Event co-organizers Seth Boyles and Seth Anderson show off lightsabers that will certainly be part of many costumes for the event, as participants are encouraged to dress up as a favorite character from the “Star Wars” universe. IRON MOUNTAIN — May 4 has been dubbed as “Star Wars Day” by followers of the popular George Lucas franchise.

The date originated from the pun “May the Fourth be with you,” a variant of the movie’s catchphrase “May the force be with you.”

Wookiees, Ewoks and droids alike are invited to The Braumart in downtown Iron Mountain on Saturday for its second-annual celebration dedicated to “a galaxy far, far away.”

Event organizers have a full afternoon planned, including photo opportunities, trivia, raffle prizes, collectibles, a food truck, themed refreshments, along with two screenings of “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.”

The movie will be shown at 2 and 7 p.m., with events and activities taking place from 4 to 7 p.m.

This year they will show the 1980 released version of “The Empire Strikes Back.” Last year they offered the original released movie.

“This is my personal favorite,” event organizer Seth Anderson said. “This is the one that took me in.”

“It’s the best ‘Star Wars’ movie,” co-organizer Stewart Boyles added.

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite character from the saga.

“A lot of fans get creative, replicating their own character and backstory in that galaxy,” Boyles said.

“It’s a storytelling role,” Anderson said. “You have this ability to dig into it and that sets the ‘Star Wars’ universe apart from all the other ones.”

At 6 p.m., organizers will take a photo outside with the marquee sign of all those in costume.

“We want to mark that milestone each year,” Anderson said.

The most creative costumes will be eligible for the annual costume contest.

As a new addition, Bored Bard Games will offer demonstrations in the lobby area of a new collectible “Star Wars” trading card game.

A collector can purchase packs to build a deck and then battle against another player, Boyles said.

“It’s really cool — the artwork in it is amazing,” he said.

Bored Bard Games has donated some of the prizes as well for the trivia and other contests of the event.

Visitors are encouraged to study up on their trivia for a chance to win galactic prizes.

Area collectors will be on hand to present and talk about some of their favorite pieces, from action figures and lunch boxes to creative handmade items.

“These are high-end collectibles,” Boyles said. “A lot of one-of-a-kind pieces that you can only get back when first came out.”

“I would even argue that they are vintage,” Anderson said, adding that the area has a good collectors’ community.

In addition to viewing the memorabilia, visitors can also take photos.

The second-annual “May the Fourth video montage,” featuring a curated selection of fan films, parodies and other “Star Wars”-adjacent video nuggets, can be viewed from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Curious Pig food truck will offer its popular menu selections.

The annual “Star Wars” theme event is open to all ages. Admission is $10 “Republic credits” at the door.

“We want the tradition to grow each year,” Anderson said. “As our space grows, we will find ways to fill it.”

Anderson added he has been inspired by Dickinson Area Community Foundation’s “Christmas in the Wizarding World” fundraiser and how they built it up over time.

“That’s how you do it,” he said.

“Everyone can see ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ whenever they want online,” Boyles added. “What you don’t get is people standing around talking about it, expressing their creativity.”

All proceeds go to benefit The Braumart’s ongoing mission to bring art and culture to the community. The Braumart is at 106 E. B St. in Iron Mountain.
