Threat risk leads Forest Park to call off classes on Friday

Few details released; investigation ongoing

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Forest Park School District canceled classes Friday after an alleged threat was made to the school Thursday, local law enforcement said.

Authorities released few details about the situation Friday, citing the ongoing investigation.

But steps were taken Friday to mitigate the risks from “the threat that we knew at the time,” said Sgt. Brian Zelakiewicz of the Crystal Falls Police Department, which is the lead agency in the investigation.

He did not say anything about the nature of those alleged threats, saying the investigation would continue through the weekend and more information may be released Monday.

Forest Park Superintendent Michelle Thomson issued this brief statement Friday: “At this time the juvenile suspect connected to the potential threat to Forest Park has been interviewed by law enforcement and steps have been taken and are ongoing to mitigate the threat.” She declined to make any further comment.

Because of the situation, Forest Park’s football game against Stephenson on Friday evening was played at North Dickinson’s field in Felch Township.

No decision had yet been made on when classes would resume at Forest Park, but the district already had a professional day scheduled Monday that did not include students.

This was only Forest Park’s second week of the 2024-25 school year after opening Aug. 26.

Neighboring West Iron County School District in Iron River had to deal with reported threats twice in 2023, on Oct. 10 and Nov. 1.

Starting at $2.99/week.
