Wildfire closes portion of US 2

NEWTON TOWNSHIP — A fire sprouted from a semi trailer Sunday morning in Mackinac County, the flames growing tall enough to touch the tips of nearby trees, eventually becoming a wildfire, causing the Michigan Department of Transportation to close a section of U.S. 2 from approximately 11 a.m. to 4 p.m, said Rob Shields, the Department of Natural Resources fire supervisor for Sault. Ste. Marie.

“We stopped the wildfire portion at one-tenth of an acre,” said Shields. “The local fire departments did a phenomenal job.”

Assisting on the scene were local fire departments from Newton, Garfield and Portage townships, along with DNR staff.

The night prior to the fire saw scattered rain across the Upper Peninsula, but the rain was nearly nonexistent where the fire took place, Shields said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
