About Monday’s Daily News — and our phones
Readers might have had a feeling of deja vu looking at Monday’s Daily News.
The Daily News office — and much of Iron Mountain and Kingsford — lost power about 5:30 p.m. Sunday during the ice storm.
While most of the inside pages had already gone to press in Powers on Sunday, the front cover, page 3-A and 5-A and the sports pages had not.
Press staff in Powers had to scramble to fill in the missing pages to publish at least some form of the newspaper. Hence the return of two sparring moose at the top of Monday’s page 1-A, along with a repeat of the Isle Royale wildlife study story. Friday’s 1-A and 1-B covers had to be re-used — along with page 3-A and 5-A — to finish off the paper.
It wasn’t a perfect solution but had to do given the situation. Still, we apologize for the repeated pages.
Power was restored Monday at the office. A full Daily News has been produced for today.
One other note in the wake of the storm: Office phones initially were not working Monday, as they run through the internet, which was down from morning into afternoon. The connection was restored by late afternoon. If you called about your newspaper, that’s why it went to voicemail.
Again, we appreciate your patience as we dealt with these challenges.
