Boy, 12, dies after being struck by vehicle in Florence County
AURORA, Wis. – A 12-year-old boy died Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle that also hit a utility pole, causing a power outage in the Town of Aurora in eastern Florence County.
Florence County Dispatch received multiple 911 calls at 6:16 p.m. Monday that a vehicle had collided with the utility pole on County Road N east of Aurora Liquors, according to a news release from Florence County Sheriff Teresa Chrisman.
Deputies from the sheriff’s department and Florence County EMS found a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old male had left the road and hit the 12-year-old boy and the power pole.
The 12-year-old was treated on site and in transit but was later pronounced dead at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson in Iron Mountain.
The 16-year-old and his juvenile passenger were not injured. Speed, driver inexperience and operating while impaired are suspected factors in the crash, according to the news release. Names will not be released, Chrisman said.
County Highway N was shut down for the evening and early morning hours while Wisconsin State Patrol did an investigation. That investigation is ongoing, according to the news release.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Florence County EMS, Florence County Highway Department, Florence County Emergency Management, Wisconsin State Patrol, We Energies and several good Samaritans who lived nearby, the news release states.
