Seibold tapped for Florence County DA

GREGORY SEIBOLD

MADISON, Wis. — Gregory Seibold has been chosen to become Florence County District Attorney.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers appointed Seibold to fill the vacancy created by the death of Michael Scholke in April. Seibold will serve the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2029.

“Gregory Seibold has shown his dedication to service as an experienced attorney, U.S. Navy veteran and a proud resident of Florence County. He will serve his community well as their next district attorney,” Evers said in a news release announcing the appointment.

Seibold since 2010 has owned and operated Seibold Law Firm LLC, a general practice representing criminal defendants and parties in civil litigation with offices in both Florence, Wis., and Iron Mountain. He has also been city attorney for Niagara, Wis., and represented the Office of Lawyer Regulation in disciplinary proceedings.

Earlier in his career, he was an associate and later, a shareholder at Murphy Desmond S.C. in Madison. His practice at that time focused on civil and administrative matters, and he represented clients in appeals before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, according to the governor’s news release.

“I am pleased to hear Gov. Evers has chosen Greg Seibold as our next district attorney,” Jeff Rickaby, Florence County coroner and retired Florence County sheriff, said in the news release. “Greg is a veteran and, consistent with his service, has demonstrated discipline, leadership, adaptability and problem-solving, serving as an attorney within our community. I’m sure he will bring these values into his new office of district attorney for the benefit of the people of Florence County.”

Seibold has lived in Florence County since 2007 and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin Law School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1986.

“I am grateful to Gov. Evers for entrusting me with the honor and responsibility of being the next Florence County District Attorney,” Seibold said. “I value the opportunity to serve both the state of Wisconsin and the citizens of Florence County, which I have called home for many years.”

His predecessor, Scholke, died April 24 at age 43 after a five-year battle with cancer, according to his obituary. He had won election Nov. 5 to the four-year position, succeeding Douglas Drexler, who retired after 32 years as Florence County prosecutor. Scholke was an Iron Mountain native and Iron Mountain High School graduate who since 2012 had been employed at Mouw & Celello, P.C. in Iron Mountain.

He moved to Florence in May 2023 and had practiced in Florence County for well over a decade.
