Kingsford to offer curbside recycling for additional monthly fee

KINGSFORD — Monthly curbside recycling will be offered to Kingsford residents through GFL Environmental Inc.

It will cost $7.70 per month, provided 1,000 households are willing to sign up, City Manager Mike Stelmaszek said. For those who take part, the charge will be added to monthly water bills.

The city is working in conjunction with the city of Norway to offer the service. While recycling participation is not mandatory, cities are required to offer the service as part of a state law that goes in effect at the end of the year, Stelmaszek said during Monday’s city council meeting.

Containers would have a 96-gallon capacity. The city has its own garage collection crews but did not want to handle recycling.

In other business, the council:

— Agreed to seek bids to pave a sidewalk from the pavilion at Cowboy Lake to the building that houses restrooms. People using wheelchairs at the park this past weekend reported having problems accessing the building because there’s no paved sidewalk.

— Approved a request to replace 636 feet of 1 1/2-inch water main with 6-inch water main on Cherry Street to Maplewood Court, where Maplewood Court intersects with Lane Avenue. The cost would be $188,746 and the work would be done by Payne and Dolan, which is currently working on a water and sewer project in the area. Five access lines would be replaced and the road would be redone, but no curbing would be replaced.

— Hired Ken Wood as the new dangerous building hearing officer for $30 an hour. Under a city ordinance that was revised in 2012, the city must have a hearing officer in place to determine what needs to be done with buildings considered dangerous. The city has about 15 to 25 problem buildings but could not take action without someone in that position.

— Approved a zoning change hearing request from Shawn Bruns to operate a dog kennel on Pyle Drive.

— Agreed to again apply for 65 deer harvest permits from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for the city’s annual managed archery hunt. Last year, 14 hunters culled 34 deer, compared with 26 deer taken in 2023.
