Voters show support for road millages

Voters in local elections across Michigan expressed support for road millages during Tuesday’s election by passing all of the seven millage renewals and four increases on Tuesday’s ballot, including two in Iron County, according to data provided by Lansing-based Gongwer News Service.

In Stambaugh Township, a road improvement renewal was approved 114 yes to 43 no. Voter turnout was 13%, according to the Iron County Clerk’s Office.

The Stambaugh millage is a five-year levy of 2 mills, or $2 per $1,000 of taxable value, for maintaining and improving secondary roads. The first year of the levy is expected to generate $239,000.

In Iron River Township, a road repair renewal was approved 112 yes to 73 no, with voter turnout of 17%. This is a three-year renewal of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, for road improvements, repair and maintenance. It will raise an estimated $80,547 in the first year.

“As the future of road funding in Michigan continues to hang in the balance during their legislative summer in-district work, voters across Michigan showed resounding support for local roads in the August election,” Denise Donohue, CEO of the County Road Association of Michigan, said in a news release Wednesday. “Michiganders have spoken loud and clear: We support our county road agencies and the need to restore our roads.”

Iron River Township voters Tuesday also approved a general operating millage renewal, 117 yes to 68 no. This is a three-year renewal of 1.25 mills, or $1.25 per $1,000 of taxable value, that will raise an estimated $100,684 in the first year.

Election results, including millages, are unofficial until certified by the State Bureau of Elections.
