IM school board awards bids for Izzo-Mariucci Center project

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain School Board recently accepted bids for the planned HVAC upgrades at the Izzo-Mariucci Center.

The bids were presented to the board by Gundlach Champion Inc. of Iron Mountain, which is overseeing the more than $2 million project.

A $400,900 bid for general trades was accepted from MBM Construction of Kingsford, which was the only bidder. Prime Mechanical of Marquette was selected for the mechanical work at $1,284,181 over four other bidders. B&B Electric of Iron Mountain was chosen for the electrical work over one other bidder as a cost of $381,180.

The project includes replacing the aging HVAC system with new boilers and converting it to a water-based system. Other work being completed includes new doors, flooring and lights in the main entry, a new trophy case, new doors at the A Street entrance and cameras to increase security.

The district will use $1.6 million from the Zanardi Trust and $800,000 from a grant to pay for the project, which is expected to start next year.

In other business, the board Sept. 8:

— Hired Dean Lombardini as part-time maintenance worker, Michelle Mayfield and Michele Fair as food service prep/servers, Mary Couper as an elementary special education long-term substitute and Beth Hart as a fourth grade long-term sub.

— Named DJ Lambert as boys junior varsity basketball coach.

— Approved Kaye Miziniak as National Honor Society advisor.

— Learned Di’Angelo Saldana and Lindsey Lewandowski will serve as student representatives to the board. They will represent early kindergarten to sixth grades and seventh to 12th grades.

— Approved a letter of termination to home school partnership community expert Cathy Shearin, who has left the district.

— Agreed to allow Kaye Miziniak to do classroom research for her doctoral dissertation.

— Agreed to contract with Cloverland Speech for additional speech therapy support.
