IM to begin leaf collections next week

IRON MOUNTAIN — Loose leaf collections will begin Monday in Iron Mountain, about a week later than in the past, due to the warm fall and trees retaining their leaves.

Collections will start in the southeast part of the city, moving west, then north, then east.

Trucks will remain in each zone for two days, with updates posted on the city’s Facebook page.

Residents are reminded to place loose leaves in the grassy area along the edge of the roadway and not on the street. Leaves that are mixed with brush won’t be collected.

The city advises that depositing leaves in gutters, streets or any other public area is prohibited by ordinance.

During this week’s council meeting, City Manager Jordan Stanchina noted that trucks will continue to collect as weather permits in areas that have piles of leaves.

In other action, the council:

— Learned that Payne and Dolan of Gladstone expects to complete paving this fall on Fairbanks Street and Golfview Drive, connecting to North Hemlock Street; and Hemlock Street from Fairbanks to Walker Street. The rest of the paving planned under a $572,532 bid awarded in September will wait until spring.

— Authorized seeking bids for two 12-horsepower lift station pumps, along with a new control panel. This equipment will replace two 5.5-horsepower pumps installed earlier this year that were found to be inadequate for the demand. The smaller pumps will be moved to another lift station as a part of the city’s scheduled upgrades. Bids will be due Nov. 3.

— Approved a contribution of $3,500 to the Lake Antoine Association to combat Eurasian milfoil at Lake Antoine. Other municipal contributions came from Breitung Township, $3,000; and Dickinson County, $1,500.

— Approved a $5,000 contribution to the Dickinson Area Economic Development Alliance. This is the amount the city has pledged annually since 2017.
