Man killed in snowmobile crash in Mackinac County

ST. IGNACE — A 61-year-old man from downstate Michigan died Saturday afternoon in a snowmobile crash in Mackinac County.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police St. Ignace Post were called just before 1 p.m. Saturday to Bay City Lake Road near Trail 47 in Clark Township, according to an MSP news release.

A preliminary investigation found the snowmobile driver, from Saline in Washtenaw County, hit a bump in the trail and was ejected. Emergency medical aid was unsuccessful.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the crash, the MSP news release states.

“We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District public information officer.

MSP was assisted by Clark Township EMS, Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

In Marquette County, a 73-year-old Ely Township man was injured Thursday when his snowmobile collided with a sled driven by a 15-year-old Michigamme boy along Trail 8 near the Peshekee Grade, according to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, who was thrown from the sled, was taken to UPHS-Bell for evaluation and later transported to UPHS-Marquette for treatment. No further information was provided on his condition.

“The accident remains under investigation,” the sheriff’s department stated in a news release. “Deputies would like to remind everyone to Ride Right while on the trails to reduce accidents.”

The sheriff’s department was assisted by Michigamme Township First Responders, Michigamme Township Fire Department and UPHS EMS.
