SAULT STE. MARIE — A 62-year-old Eckerman man died Saturday in a snowmobile crash in Chippewa County.

The crash was reported about 3:20 p.m. Eastern time Saturday on West Green Shack Road near South Chippewa Hunt Club Row in Whitefish Township, according to the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post.

Troopers found the snowmobile was southbound on West Green Shack Road when it struck an embankment and went airborne, throwing the driver.

A witness attempted emergency medical aid but the man was pronounced dead at the site. Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, MSP stated in a news release.

MSP was assisted by Whitefish Township Fire and EMS and Chippewa County Central Dispatch.
