Iron Mountain names top seniors in Class of 2026

Vivian Petrusch
IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain High School has announced five seniors as the academic top 10% of the graduating Class of 2026.
Commencement ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, at the IMHS Stadium.
— Vivian Petrusch, valedictorian with a perfect 4.0 academic record, is the daughter of Shelly Petrusch of Iron Mountain.
Petrusch has been an exemplary student, receiving highest academic honors all four years of high school. She participated in student council for two years, concert band and pep band for three years, as well as participating in Science Olympiad, Tri-Hi-Y and Youth in Government clubs for a year. Petrusch was selected for honors band her junior year and was first chair on flute for three years.
Petrusch has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years. She was also a four-year athlete, participating in volleyball and softball, where she earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award her junior year.

Elena Nelson
In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming and hiking. Petrusch plans to study architecture this fall at the University of Detroit Mercy.
— Elena Nelson, salutatorian of the class, is the daughter of Kathy and Mike Nelson of Iron Mountain.
She has been an active member of the IMHS community, participating in student council, Youth in Government, Varsity Club, Tri-Hi-Y and Environmental Club for two years. She has also been an extremely active band member, serving in concert band and pep band for four years as well as jazz band for three years, where she earned first chair in flute, alto saxophone and tenor.
Nelson was a four-year athlete on both the volleyball and varsity swim teams, serving as swim team captain this year. She is a top academic achiever, having earned the Principal’s Academic Award the last three years, highest academic honor roll for all four years and has been a National Honor Society member for two years. Nelson was selected to represent IMHS at American Legion Auxiliary Girls State her junior year.
In her free time, she likes to mountain bike and play with the Norway City Band.

Georgia Mundy
Nelson plans to pursue a career in diesel mechanics at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
— Georgia Mundy is the daughter of Craig and Erin Recla of Iron Mountain and George Mundy of Iron Mountain.
She has been an exemplary student, receiving the Principal’s Academic Honor award all four years of high school, maintaining honor roll status all four years and being a National Honor Society member for the past two years.
In her sophomore year, she was selected to represent IMHS at the MyLead Leadership conference on the campus of Michigan State University and returned her junior year as a volunteer leader. In her junior year, Mundy was selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls State and was nominated by her teachers to receive the Michigan Tech Society of Women Engineers Merit Award.
In addition to her academic excellence, Mundy has been very involved in clubs, band and community service. She has been a four-year member of concert, pep and jazz band, where she earned first chair trumpet this year, and was selected for honors band three years.

Lucy Baumgartner
She has been a Youth Advisory Council member for five years, and for three years has been involved in Youth in Government, Tri-Hi-Y, art club, student council, Science Olympiad and Environmental club. Mundy participated in varsity club and the Mountaineer Mindset initiative for two years, and Quiz Bowl for a year.
She played softball her junior year and volleyball all four years, serving as team captain this year.
Additionally, Mundy has acquired more than 280 hours of volunteer service in the community and has been recognized for this accomplishment by receiving the National Community Service Merit and Honor award the past three years.
In her free time, she enjoys volunteering and playing with the Norway City Band.
Mundy plans to pursue a career in physical therapy at the University of Michigan.

Avea Brown
— Lucy Baumgartner is the daughter of Sarah and Chris Cavalieri of Iron Mountain and Robby Baumgartner of Iron River.
She has been an extremely active participant in clubs, where she was not content to just participate but was in leadership positions in many. She is a five-year member of Youth Advisory Council, serving as president. She spent three years in Environmental Club, serving as vice president; Tri-Hi-Y, serving as president; and was secretary for Varsity Club, student council and Youth in Government. She also participated two years in art club and a year in Key Club.
Baumgartner is a two-year member of National Honor Society and was secretary for a year and has earned three Principal’s Academic Honor Awards.
She participated all four years of high school in concert, pep and marching band.
Baumgartner has been a top Mountaineer athlete. She has participated in gymnastics for 14 years, the past three on the co-op varsity gymnastics team, where she was captain and a three-time regional qualifier, GNC All-Around Champion and state qualifier. She participated in volleyball all four years, serving as captain and earning the Freshman Athletic Award, JV Athletic Award, and two varsity letter awards.
Baumgartner has acquired more than 480 hours of volunteer service and has been awarded four Merit and four Honor National Community service awards, three Ambassador National Community service awards and two Michigan Impact Awards.
She was selected to represent IMHS at MyLead at Michigan State her sophomore year and returned her junior year as a programming intern.
She works for Gundlach Champion through the IMHS work-based co-op and has also worked for the YMCA and Jean Kay’s Pasties.
Baumgartner plans to study psychology this fall at Northern Michigan University .
— Avea Brown is the daughter of Mary Beth Brown and Jason Brown of Iron Mountain.
She earned highest honors freshman and sophomore years and high honors the past two years and has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years, serving as vice president.
She has been extremely active in clubs, where she has been a four-year member of Youth Advisory Council, Environmental Club, Tri-Hi-Y and Varsity Club, serving as vice president.
Brown volunteered as a Big Sister for the Big Brother, Big Sister group, mentoring a younger student at the school.
She has been active in athletics as well. She has danced with Northern Dance Academy for two years, performing in multiple recitals. She has been a four-year varsity tennis player, competing in both one and two singles and played both soccer and basketball for one year.
Brown plans to study business at Florida Atlantic University.
