Local schools temporarily locked down as precaution
An unspecified off-campus situation caused some local schools to take security precautions Wednesday, but no information was released on the nature of the concern other than to report it was resolved by afternoon.
Breitung Township Schools posted a notice on its Facebook page after 11 a.m. Wednesday, describing a “secure action” where doors are locked and no one can leave or enter. Classes, meanwhile, continued.
Just before 1 p.m., the action was lifted.
The school district, in a statement, extended appreciation to Kingsford Public Safety, Iron Mountain Police Department, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, the Michigan State Police, Dickinson-Iron Technical Education Center and Schilleman Bus Service for their assistance and/or readiness to help.
KPS, in a later statement, thanked Breitung Township Schools administration for its continued commitment to student safety.
At least one other area school district, Norway-Vulcan, reportedly also went into secured status, but few details were available.
