Norway takes two from Jets

Bobcats fall 1-0 in eight against Hilbert

Norway hosted North Central on Saturday and posted a pair of 10-run five-inning Skyline Conference wins at Mike Maule Field.

“Overall we had a pretty good day on the mound and on offense,” said Knights coach Tony Adams. “Our communication was better and we were able to get some outs on the base paths defensively.”

Norway claimed the opener 12-2 and held the Jets to one hit in the second game, winning 10-0.

Owen Baij pitched the first four innings of the second game, allowing one hit, walking one and fanning six. Cameron Varda wrapped it up with a 10-pitch fifth inning, striking out two.

Baij suppled plenty of offense with a triple and two doubles. Kellan Amundson and Trenton Halvas doubled.

In all, the Knights collected 10 hits as Baij drove in four runs and Tobi Anderson brought home a pair.

Kaden Malone had North Central’s only hit.

Norway took charge in the opener with a seven-run first inning. The Knights had eight hits, including a triple and double from Elliott Kraemer. Amundson and Halvas each ripped a double and single.

Carter Cazzola pitched four innings for the win, allowing two hits, one earned run and a walk. He struck out one. Hunter Langin worked the fifth, giving up no hits, no runs and fanning two.

The Knights (8-5, 4-0) travel to Iron Mountain for a doubleheader Wednesday, then go to North Dickinson for a conference doubleheader Thursday.

“Our pre-pitch process needs to improve quickly along with our 2-strike approach at the plate,” Adams said of the tasks ahead.

Hilbert 1,

Florence 0

Florence and Hilbert battled to a scoreless tie before the Wolves pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis.

“A very neat experience for our young team to play at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers stadium,” said Florence coach Kris Johnson. “Our pitching was solid from start to finish.”

The Bobcats mustered five hits, drew three walks and stole four bases, but couldn’t crack the scoring column.

Parker Anderson’s two-out single — one of just three hits for the Wolves — ended the duel.

Florence’s Bradly Steber pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit, walking none and fanning five. Logan McCoy added a scoreless sixth, fanning one.

Mason Koski took the mound in the seventh, striking out four before surrendering the winning run in the eighth.

Steber and freshman Beau Bartz had two singles each, and Koski doubled. Each team committed three errors.

The Bobcats (5-3, 3-1) will host Wabeno-Laona in a Northern Lakes Conference game Tuesday.

Crivitz 11,

Iron Mountain 1

Crivitz defeated Iron Mountain in six innings in a non-conference game Friday.

The visiting Mountaineers were held to three hits, including a double and single by Joey Wahoviak.

Iron Mountain’s Charles Anderson added a single.

Crivitz starter Pierce Polomis worked four innings, allowing the three hits, walking three and striking out seven. Stephen Allard pitched the final two innings, fanning one.

Iron Mountain sent five players to the mound — Anderson, Connor Pickettt, Brayden Kassin, Gavin Winters and Lane Wender. They allowed seven earned runs and struck out eight.

The Mountaineers play at Kingsford today and host Norway for a doubleheader Wednesday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
