IRON RIVER — Alfred J. Perlongo, 71, of Iron River, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Aspirus Iron River Hospital.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1948, in Stambaugh, the son of the late Fred and Lydia (Bianchi) Perlongo. He attended Iron River Schools, graduating from Iron River High School with the Class of 1966.

Al married Janice Beauchamp on Feb. 28, 1970, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River. The couple celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this year.

He was employed as a carpenter and as a shoe repairman with his father at Fred’s Shoe Service and then took over the business after his father’s passing.

Al was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Carpenters Union, and Sons of the American Legion at Alfred Branchini Post 17, where he served as a past commander.

Al was a 38-year member of the Iron River Fire Department then the West Iron County Fire Department, and retired as Fire Chief on Dec. 31, 2014.

Al was very community-minded and served as an Iron River City Council member from July 1994 to March 1996, and again from January 2012 to April 2013.

He served as mayor of Iron River from April 1996 to December 2001. Al was a very active member and chairperson on the board for 911 Dispatch in Iron County and the city’s recreation plans.

He enjoyed spending time at camp with his grandsons, hunting, and being involved with the fire department.

Al was also an avid sports fan and was a member of the “chain gang” for West Iron football.

Al is survived by his wife, Janice; son, Derek (Koren) Perlongo of Iron River; grandsons, Noah and Nickalas Perlongo; special friends, Mike and Sandy Goriesky and their sons; Father George Maki; and nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Tyler James Perlongo.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Members of the Iron County Firemen’s Association and other firefighters will form an honor guard at the service.

Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Iron County Fire Department.
