Barbara M. Cleveland
1951-2023
KATY, TEXAS — Barbara M. (Amond) Cleveland, 72, of Katy, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at Houston Methodist West Hospital, Houston.
Barbara was born on Aug. 15, 1951, in Norway, the oldest of seven children, to the late Ernest and Lily (Wogec) Amond.
Barbara is survived by her son, Christopher (Penny) Cleveland; daughter, Katherine Cleveland (Robert Husereau); brothers, Stephen (Karen) Amond and John (Sue) Amond; sisters, Jeanette (Gerard) Micksch, Elizabeth (Richard) Gedvick, Alice Amond, and Andrea Pociask; and granddaughter, Olivia.
She graduated from Niagara High School in 1969, then sought adventure and work in Montana for several years before moving to Pembine, Wis. In 1985, Barbara and her children (ages 9 and 5) started a new chapter in her life with a move to Houston. She attended Houston Community College and earned a physical therapist assistant degree in July 1988.
Barbara immediately started a lengthy career working at St. Joseph Hospital in downtown Houston, where she remained for over 33 years, retiring in December 2021. She was generous with her time, visiting patients after work, ensuring their needs were met during their stay in the hospital.
She enjoyed listening to classic rock and Celtic folk music, reading, astrology and weather, spending time with her granddaughter, and the many pets who kept her entertained during her life. She was not much for the internet or email but did have a great time playing Solitaire for hours on her iPad. The only thing she was unable to get enough of was traveling, and she loved train trips and visiting her brothers and sisters.
Barbara was a beautiful and kind soul and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway. A Funeral Memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the Church, with Rev. Fr. Martin Flynn officiating.
