Opposed to IM school millage

To all the voters of Iron Mountain, please consider some things before going to the polls on May 2:

1. North Elementary is not paid off yet. They are hoping to sell it. What is it a desirable location for?

2. New proposed Early Childhood/Kindergarten Academy will be on streets with traffic to the west side and next to a very active church.

3. The superintendent in a public forum said the current enrollment trend dips then levels off, dips and levels off, never mentioning an increase. Keep in mind the birth rates are declining. The administration hopes the new Kindergarten Academy and elementary building will entice new students. Looking at the pictures, the early childhood building is surrounded by two parking lots with a fence around the playground. North has a new playground behind the building, away from traffic. It’s nice to have a new building, but it’s important to remember you need good, caring staff in the building.

4. Busing issues will not change, as students from the north, east, and west sides will still need transportation. With the increased number of students in a concentrated area, the traffic is going to be greatly increased.

5. Wouldn’t it be in the students’ best interest to invest money in classes for teaching life skills such as cooking, sewing, metals and woods? They are proposing to renovate the industrial arts building for a records room, offices, and shipping and receiving dock. Again, increasing truck traffic in that hub.

6. A few years ago, the high school was renovated to accommodate the fifth and sixth graders of the district, and now they are proposing to move them out of that new section and put them back with the elementary students. Why is that okay to do now?

Please consider when casting your vote what really is in the best interest of the students. If you do not want this millage to pass, get out and vote “NO” on May 2.
