Millage an investment in students

On Tuesday, Dickinson County voters will have the opportunity to renew the Bay College Iron Mountain Campus millage — a renewal, not a new tax — that has supported local students, families and businesses for nearly 20 years.

Bay College is more than a campus; it’s an economic engine and a lifeline for affordable, local education. Since 1977, more than 8,300 students have taken classes at the Iron Mountain campus, with 1,879 graduates earning degrees that have fueled our workforce. More than 81% of students come from right here in Dickinson County. Without Bay College, many of our young people would leave the community for education elsewhere, taking their talents — and future spending — along with them.

The campus also has a significant economic impact, contributing $1.9 million annually to the county economy and $4 million in added income from alumni working locally. Every dollar from this renewal helps keep tuition affordable for Dickinson County students, supports 23 faculty and staff, and ensures that Bay College remains a strong presence in our region.

The cost is minimal — just 35 cents per day for a $125,000 home — but the return is immeasurable. Without this renewal, tuition rates and services for local students could increase, and the quality of education and workforce development we’ve come to depend on could be at risk.

Let’s continue investing in our students, our economy, and our future. I encourage everyone to vote YES on the Bay College Iron Mountain Campus millage renewal.

Starting at $3.50/week.
