Vote ‘no’ on Bay IM millage

EDITOR:

Here we go again. Dickinson County taxpayers are being asked to help fund the Bay College Iron Mountain campus with another 20-year millage. Let’s call this what it is — overreach.

They’ve been in our county for two decades, thanks in part to land donated by a local family and a millage that was approved back in 2005 to help them build their campus. Why are we being asked to pay for another two decades? That’s a lot of money and a long time.

Bay College is in the business of education. Are taxpayers asked to help other businesses in town pay for operating expenses? No way. So why this particular business? It’s a one-sided deal and Dickinson County taxpayers foot the bill.

Bay College already has plenty of other funding sources. Besides, most community colleges don’t rely on local property taxes like this — and they shouldn’t.

It’s time to hit pause on the Bay College millage. It’s just bad policy. That’s why I will vote against it on Aug. 5.

Starting at $3.50/week.
