Grant appreciated at Light at the Inn

Bouquets and Barbs

Bouquet: Recently, Light at the Inn was awarded a $2,000 grant from the Dickinson Area Community Foundation. This grant will be applied to our 2021 programs to enable us to supply emergency housing, meals and further assistance to the people in Dickinson and Iron counties who may find themselves without appropriate shelter.

During this past year, Light at the Inn has continued to operate; however, due to the pandemic, our method has become quite different. Last November, Light at the Inn partnered with Community Action AM, a housing and resource agency based in Marquette that serves 10 counties in the central Upper Peninsula area. In collaboration with them, Light at the Inn is currently the after-hour emergency hotel voucher-issuing agency in the Dickinson-Iron county area. Under this program, Light at the Inn has been able to issue a limited hotel voucher, assist with meals and direct the homeless person or family to the proper social agency to further assess their needs. Just since November, this program has provided more than 40 homeless men, women and children with shelter, meals and social assistance.

It is only through grants like this from the Community Foundation, in combination with church, individual and business donations, that Light at the Inn is able to continue this beneficial program. Thank you to all who envision and work to make this a better community.
