McBroom found strength, truth in election probe

We were pleased with the work undertaken recently by the Michigan Senate’s Oversight Committee, chaired by none other than state Sen. Ed McBroom.

The Waucedah Township Republican, against the expectations of many, found that the 2020 election in the state of Michigan was honest and held with integrity.

While the finding was no surprise, the fact that it came from a Republican-dominated state Senate panel gave it gravitas it otherwise wouldn’t have had.

Politically, McBroom has benefited in some broad way from this situation. After developing — rightly or wrongly — a reputation among some as little more than a Trump toady on the whole stolen election nonsense, the senator found both strength and truth in the process of investigation, rendering the judgment he did.

He’s deservedly basking in the glow of good reviews, rating stories in national publications and on network news broadcasts.

Former President Trump wasted no time in lashing out against McBroom and state Sen. Mike Shirkey, the other top Republican on the Oversight Committee, accusing both of a coverup, among other absurd things.

We think McBroom will get through this and come out stronger than before. From where we sit, this is why we believe he was sent to Lansing, to do the hard work under difficult circumstances for the people of the Upper Peninsula.

On this issue, he has earned our respect.
