A summer ‘bump’ in COVID-19 cases

Unlike influenza, which nearly disappears in the summer, COVID-19 hangs around.

Aspirus Health Care System in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula has observed a recent increase in COVID-19 cases. Throughout the summer, Aspirus data has shown a steady increase in the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests, rising from 2% in early May to over 10% in early July.

This pattern mirrors the general uptick in cases seen in several regions of the U.S.

“While our latest COVID-19 test data indicates a rise in positive cases, this is not a dramatic public health concern but rather a reminder of the virus’s continued presence,” said Dr. Steven Phillipson, Aspirus system director for hospital medicine. “We are prepared and equipped to handle this increase and continue to prioritize the safety and health of our community.”

Hospitalizations have remained relatively stable despite the rise in positive cases. The Aspirus system has seen a total of 151 admissions due to COVID-19 this calendar year through the beginning of July with no significant increase since positive tests began to increase.

“Preventive measures and vaccinations remain our best tools in combating the spread of COVID-19,” Phillipson added. “We encourage everyone, especially those who are vulnerable or have not yet received their booster shots, to take these steps to protect themselves and others.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who are up to date on immunizations have lower risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19 than people who are unvaccinated or who have not completed the doses recommended for them.

Utilization of preventative measures such as masking and social distancing, especially in crowded and indoor settings can help slow the spread of COVID-19, the CDC advises.
