The letters thus far that have appeared in the Daily News against Proposal 3 have, in their zeal to defend the rights of fetuses, forgotten entirely about the fact that the people who gestate those fetuses also exist and have rights. Disabled people are consistently overlooked in America, but maybe nowhere so much as in the discussion of reproductive rights. As a disabled woman, I am writing to ask your readers to please consider some of the following thoughts, and then vote “yes” on Proposal 3 in the Nov. 8 election. Youth Camp ‘one of the best ever’

EDITOR: This was the 78th summer for the Iron County Youth Camp, Camp Batawagama. It was great to see all our campers return in 2022 after having to cancel due to the COVID epidemic in 2020 and 2021. This summer was very successful and according to many of our staff members, “one of the best ever!” We were able to provide the youth of Iron County and surrounding areas with six full weeks of Youth Camp, while maintaining the same traditional programs that have made Batawagama so popular over the years. Americans pride themselves on living in a land where the right to “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” is enshrined in our most cherished documents. But we cannot claim that there is any truth to this doctrine if the medium through which we actually live that life, our very physical bodies, are not uniquely under our own personal decision-making control. Another reason to vote ‘no’ on Prop 3

A constitution is the set of rules about how a country or state should be governed. It includes the framework, and powers of the government along with the fundamental rights of the people. It is a guarantee of civil rights and liberties. Contrast this with laws. Laws are a set of rules that govern the behavior of the people of the land. They regulate the actions of citizens and guarantee morality in action (however the populace defines that morality). Laws are debated, rigorously, and can involve compromise. Suggestions that Proposal 3 on the upcoming Michigan ballot are “confusing” are completely absurd. Have people who think this even read it? It’s very clear about what it intends to do. Prop 3 will give to Michigan what the Roe v. Wade decision once gave America: an assurance of reproductive rights balanced against fetal viability.
