Museum in CF needs support

The historic Harbour House Museum in the heart of Crystal Falls is facing a critical time of its 30-plus years since its establishment. In the past, the whole community of enlightened, caring people came together and saw the need for a city museum and had the foresight to establish one. With the help of the First National Bank of Crystal Falls and the generosity of Howard Koob, the Harbour House was purchased to house a city and area museum. The ownership of the building was turned over to the City of Crystal Falls in trust with the encouragement and foresight of the then-mayor and ...

Bipartisan commission needed on insurrection

EDITOR: I Remember the bipartisan 9/11 Commission. None of us enjoyed hearing about the multiple failures of intelligence, imagination, and security that left us vulnerable to foreign terrorists. But we learned from it. This week we observed the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Several hundred Black people were killed and 40 city blocks of Black-owned property were destroyed. The front page of the main Tulsa newspaper headline read, “Riots result in 2 white deaths.” The next day that same paper reported that “many Whites were injured.” No wonder many of us ...

Groups need younger veterans

EDITOR: Attendance at Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion meetings is at an all-time low, which affects our community functions and honoring our veterans. We are appealing to all services and members to reach out to your fellow veterans and families — invite them to your local VFW or Legion posts to become familiar with the events and to support each other. We have a lot of members who pay their dues, with the majority older than age 70. So there’s an immediate need for younger veterans to attend and become familiar with the positions of post commander, honor guard, ...

Repeating history under Biden

After electing an affable, “man of the people” politician as president, we saw our country plunge into one calamity after another. We had seen long lines at the pump, skyrocketing inflation, exponential increases in gas prices, conflict with Iran, high unemployment, very weak job growth and rising tensions between Israel and its neighbors. This “national malaise” came to define Jimmy Carter’s presidency and he was soundly defeated after four years by Ronald Reagan. Isn’t it ironic that Joe Biden recently went to Georgia to do a photo-op with Jimmy Carter? History is ...

A message for Pentecost Sunday

On Pentecost Sunday, nearly 50 churches throughout Dickinson County and outlying areas have been invited to distribute 5,000 “Holy Spirit, You are welcome here” magnets to their parishioners. The request that went out to all priests and pastors was simple: “Include the ‘Holy Spirit, You are welcome here’ message in your Pentecost Sunday sermon and distribute the magnets after church services that day.” In Dickinson County, as well as around the world, we experience the same challenges as other communities. There are devastating issues pulling families apart: abortion, ...

Consolidated mining permit unfair, unwise

EDITOR: After Aquila’s decision not to appeal the denial of their wetlands permit, they reaffirmed plans to submit a new mining permit application that will include both the open pit and underground mine plans. To minimize the cost and delay of submitting completely new mining, wetlands, air quality, wastewater discharge and dam safety permit applications, the company would like to submit a consolidated mining permit that would “compress the timeline to permit issuances.” This would place an unfair financial burden on citizens and the Menominee Tribe to review the thousands ...
