Flivvs boys, West Iron girls roll at Kingsford Invite
KINGSFORD – The host Flivver boys ran away with the 41st annual Kingsford Invitational track & field championship Tuesday.
Kingsford tallied 186 points to smother runner-up North Dickinson with 84.5. Third-place Northwoods Storm, a Florence-Niagara coop team, scored 79.5.
“Overall, it was a great win and a good tune-up going into the regionals (Friday in Negaunee),” said Kingsford Coach Doug Roberts.
The Flivvers captured nine event including three relays (3200, 400 and 1600). Rusty Johnson, West Iron County’s anchor in the 800 relay, prevented a sweep by passing the Flivvers down the stretch.
Kingsford’s Taylor Wickman figured in three firsts, posting a season-low 2:07.19 in the 800. He also anchored the 3200 and 1600 relays.
Danny Fleming out-dueled Forest Park’s Billy Ragio in the pole vault (both cleared 11-feet-6) and placed second in both hurdles.
“Dan had a really good night,” Roberts said. “That was his best vaulting of the year so far and some of his best times in the hurdles.”
Daniel Harrington triumphed in long jump and 1600 relay, took second in the high jump behind teammate Brandon Kowalkowski, and finished third in the 400.
Trevor Roberts tallied victories in the 100 and 400 relay, second in 800 relay and third in long jump. Jorge Sanchez won the mile and took second in the 3200.
Noah Berg produced a first in shot put for the Nordics. Adam Parent led the Storm with a sweep of the hurdles and second in the long jump.
Wykons’ Johnson won the 200 while teammate Nik Thoney was runner-up in the 100 and 200.
Iron Mountain Coach Kevin Sullivan was impressed with Nate Carey winning the 3200 run with a personal best time of 10.37.08. The junior also anchored the 3200 relay (senior Mason Schinderle, junior Tanner Huotari and sophomore Davin Steva) that placed second.
Justin Rock wound up second in discus with a personal best throw of 101-feet-2, seven feet farther than past performances. The junior also grabbed third in the shot.
“Our relay teams did very well and three out of the four relay teams finished in fourth or better,” Sullivan said. “Davin Steva and Lucas Cavalieri ran strong in the 1600 meter run (third and fourth).”
They also placed in the 800 run.
“We are looking for a great showing at the regionals,” Sullivan said.
