Cecconi, Plaisier have sights on UP title

Only UP champions in this weekend’s UPLGA tournament

NORWAY — Iron Mountain’s Becky Cecconi won four UP Ladies Golf Association championships in the early 1990s.

How about a fifth in the 92nd annual UP tournament starting Saturday at Oak Crest Golf Course?

“It depends on who shows up,” Cecconi said with a laugh. “It’s been a long time. I just want to be consistent, consistently good, not consistently bad.

“It’s been up and down. If I can play a bunch of days in a row and get some consistency, it will be good. I’m just trying to minimize those big numbers and play smart.”

Cecconi and Ishpeming’s Karen Plaisier, two UP Hall of Famers, are the only former champions in the 56-player field. Defending champion Kendra Anderson of Marquette and runner-up Abby Dufrane of Marinette, who won the 2016 title, will not be returning.

Golfers play a qualifying medal round Saturday, with the low 16 in championship flight. Match play will be staged from Sunday through Tuesday in six flights.

Plaisier, the self-described “senior citizen” of the tournament, captured the 2015 UP title at age 65. She’s also been runner-up six times.

“You don’t know. You never know,” said Plaisier about winning another UP title. “I just play my own game and whatever happens, happens. I’m not playing the caliber to win this right now. I’ve lost a lot of distance. The short game and putting keep me in.”

Plaisier figures a score around 88 may be good enough to make the championship flight.

“You don’t see that many low handicaps,” she said.

Lake Linden’s Zoe Woodworth, a former Colorado Mesa University golfers, enters with a tournament-low three handicap. Cecconi, Plaisier, Woodworth and three-time MHSAA UP Division 1 medalist Paxton Johnson of Escanaba will tee off at 9 a.m. to start the tournament.

Hancock High School junior Payton Dube is in the second group teeing off at 9:10 a.m. with a pair of Oak Crest standouts in Kathy Gagnon and Leah Skoglund plus Karen McCorkle of Pembine.

“You’ve got two good young players (in Paxton and Payton),” Plaisier said. “That’s what it’s all about, getting the young people to play.”

Dube posted an 84 in this spring’s MHSAA Division 2 tournament at Oak Crest to win the title by 19 strokes.

“It’s all about making the smart plays,” Dube said after the UP tournament in Norway. “It’s (Oak Crest) not too long and pretty open.

“There’s places where you can get in trouble like the sandtraps and stuff. But if you keep it straight you should be pretty good.”

Cecconi recently played Oak Crest after not seeing the course for some time. Plaisier is pretty much in the same situation.

“I kind of forgot some stuff (about Oak Crest),” Cecconi said. “It’s in good shape and the greens are good.

“Compared to our course (Pine Grove in Iron Mountain), it’s flatter with not as many challenging lies.”

Noted Plaisier on the UP site, “It’s a pretty standard course with a few holes you’ll always remember. It’s a nice golf course.”

Tournament director Kevin Londo, director of golf and operations at Oak Crest, believes “course knowledge will be a big factor.”

“The Oak Crest girls understand where they can’t miss it and that will help them a lot,” Londo said. “What’s nice about this course, for men and women, it’s a course that you can get in trouble. But you can also score well if you’re hitting the ball decent.”

Oak Crest plays to a par 74 and around 6,000 yards for the ladies.

Gagnon and Skoglund are two low handicap golfers from Oak Crest. Heidi Olson is another solid Oak Crest golfer.

Ten golfers teeing off Saturday qualified for championship flight last year at Marquette — Cecconi, Johnson, Plaisier, Woodworth, McCorkle, Kristie Markell of Iron Mountain, Nancy Osier of Wakefield, JoAnn Poncino of Niagara, Barbara Rossi of Chassell and Janet Hruska of Marquette.
