Soccer: Mountaineers drop weekend matches

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Iron Mountain lost a pair of boys soccer games to host Northland Pines and Peshtigo on Saturday.

The shorthanded Mountaineers bowed by 2-0 and 4-1 scores. David Brule (ACT testing) did not play Saturday and goalkeeper Caleb Bryant missed the second game after drawing a red card in the first game.

“Caleb challenged a player on a through ball and missed the ball but tripped the player and drew a red card in the first game,” said Iron Mountain head coach Dave Brule. “That put us down a man and he was ineligible for the second game.”

The Mountaineers also had a goal called back on an off-side call early in the first game. Eamonn Weed scored IM’s only goal in the second game.

“Despite the scores, the games were close and we dominated possession,” said Coach Brule, noting 56 percent in the first game and 60 percent in the second game. “Andrew Person had to step into the goal with no varsity experience as a goalkeeper and made several nice saves even though he doesn’t normally play that position.

“Our defense was very strong with Jaden Vicenzi, Joe Bogaudo, Myles Carey and Eamonn Weed anchoring our back line.”

The Mountaineers (1-5) play their home opener Tuesday against Marinette and are scheduled to host Marquette on Wednesday.
