IRON MOUNTAIN — A walkoff home run in the first game helped Iron Mountain split a doubleheader against Norway on Monday.

The Mountaineers (10-7) lost a 6-1 lead in the sixth as Norway rallied. But Jorden Stoner’s two-run home run with two outs spoiled the Knights’ comeback.

Norway won the nightcap 10-4.

“We haven’t had many close games, like Kingsford early in the year,” Norway head coach Bob Bal said of a one-run win against the Flivvers on April 23. “Either they run us out of the gym or we run them out of the gym. We don’t have any close games. Tonight to have close games and the girls to battle back… it would’ve been nice, but at the end of the day we’re going to learn more from this than anything.”

In the first game, Norway (19-12) took a one-run lead in the seventh with an RBI double by Kali Stanchina.

Averie Popp hit a three-run home run in the sixth that cut Iron Mountain’s lead to 6-5 in the sixth.

“That’s huge,” Norway head coach Bob Bal said. “We were down 6-1 and to battle back, then take the lead and have a chance at the end… that’s big.”

Iron Mountain’s Emma Thomann hit a two-run home run in the third. Stoner had a two-run double. Ella Fortner had an RBI double. Brionna Tomasoski had an RBI double.

Ada VanHolla had an RBI single in the sixth for the Knights.

Claire Mongrain pitched for Iron Mountain and gave up seven runs on (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Stanchina pitched for Norway and gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Norway bounced back with the win in the nightcap. The Knights added four insurance runs in the seventh.

Popp had three hits and an RBI for Norway. Stanchina added two hits and an RBI. VanHolla, Haley Clifford and Mackenzie Gilroy also had RBIs.

“Second game was ho-hum. Emotions were flat,” Bal said. “All the emotions were spent on the first game.”

Iron Mountain scored twice in the first two innings before Norway scored three in the third to take a 5-4 lead. VanHolla had an RBI double for the go-ahead run. She also tripled in the seventh.

The Mountaineers’ runs came with a solo home run by Saylor Swartout and an RBI groundout by Thomann in the first. A wild pitch and error scored Iron Mountain’s runs in the second.

Allie Sheski pitched for Norway and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Hannah Proudfit pitched for Iron Mountain and gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
