ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls’ tennis team faced the Kingsford Flivvers during a break in the weather here Thursday, but neither team was able to snatch victory. The Eskymos split with the Flivvers, 4-4.

Escanaba found three of its wins in the doubles flights. At No. 1, Esky’s Maddy Ide and Alison Sommers started off trading games with Anna Murvich and Bailey Johnson in the first set. After the Flivvers tied it at 2, the Eskymos found their rhythm and won four games in a row to take the set. The momentum kept rolling as Ide and Sommers shut out Kingsford in the second set.

At No. 2, Anna Branstrom and Laura Sliva took three quick games from Kingsford’s Valerie Richtig and Karlee Hulkkonen. The Flivvers earned one game before the Esky pair continued on with three straight to win the first set. Richtig and Hulkkonen parlayed their experience into winning the first game in the second set, but were only able to win one more before Sliva and Branstrom made it to six.

Escanaba’s Maddy Mishica and Gracie Wickham rolled past Abby Richer and Maddie Meneghini in both sets at No. 3, losing just one game in each.

“Great showing on the doubles side today,” Esky tennis coach Chris Ogren said. “No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles all played very well and got comfortable wins.”

No. 4 doubles was a three-set marathon match that eventually went to the Flivvers. Kingsford’s Liz Penegor and Jenna Olkkonen came back strong after a dropped first set against Rylee Kuehl and Ashley Sylvester.

The Flivvers came out strong again in the second set, taking the first three from the Esky duo on their way to a 6-2 win. Both sides rebounded in the third, with the Flivvers winning it 7-5.

The Flivvers mirrored the Eskymos in the singles flights.

At No. 1, the Flivvers’ Stephanie List came back to take two sets and earned a victory against Jasmine Clark. Clark won the first 6-3 but couldn’t keep up the momentum, falling 6-2 and 6-3 in the following sets.

Kingsford’s Jessica Tomososki beat Ukiah Penegor in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3, and Kingsford’s Lizzy Cross finished Esky’s Amber Yang in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

“Kingsford’s team is very strong on the singles side, and we saw that today,” Ogren said.

Flivvers head coach Tracy Rutter was pleased with her team’s performance on the afternoon.

“The girls played great today,” she said. “Stephanie(List) played great at No. 1 Singles, playing for almost three hours and coming out with a three set victory. Our No. 4 Doubles(Jenna olkkenon-Liz Penegor) contnue to play incredibly well” Rutter said.
