GIRLS TENNIS: Wykons down Iron Mountain, 5-3

Matt McCarthy/The Daily News Iron Mountain’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Aziza Burgoon, left, and Megan Garvaglia await a serve Tuesday.

IRON MOUNTAIN — In non-conference girls tennis Tuesday, the Lady Wykons of West Iron County defeated Iron Mountain 5-3. The three-location meet was played in warm September weather.

“Over the last few matches, I’ve been very happy with the play of our singles players. They’re veteran players and have been having great success” said Iron Mountain coach Sharon Ducat.

Ducat added, “Our doubles teams have had mixed results, but are young and learning. They’ve shown good improvement and that’s what I’m asking from them.”

West Iron coach Joe Serbentas was very pleased with his team’s play the last two days.

“Playing Marquette and Iron Mountain in back to back days, felt good for our team. We have been a little inconsistent due to cancelations of practices and matches because of weather. Today we were far more consistent than against Marquette,” he said.

“Our singles players continue to improve, our doubles teams continue to shine for us. Today felt good for us to get back into the win column. This will hopefully further build our confidence moving forward,” said Serbentas.

Iron Mountain’s next match is home against Negaunee on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. West Iron visits Ishpeming on the same day at 3:15 p.m.
