Trojans end regular season with a win

Matt McCarthy/The Daily News FOREST PARK’S MEGAN Bucek (9) and Mercedes Simmons try to block the attempt of Bark River Harris’ Makena Lockwood during Thursday’s volleyball match.

CRYSTAL FALLS — In a competitive and exciting match, Forest Park rallied past Skyline Conference foe Bark River-Harris 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23) in the regular season finale for both squads Thursday at Eddie Chambers Memorial Gymnasium.

The Lady Trojans were celebrating senior night and, in the spirit of the evening, many of the students in attendance were decked out in Halloween costumes.

“I thought we started the match a little flat-footed, even in to the second set, but we rallied and came back and were able to win the set, and the third and fourth as well,” Trojans head coach Ana Valesano said.

In a back and forth manner, with no significant scoring runs for either team, the first set went to the Broncos. That had BR-H head coach Jen Ives very pleased, as did her team’s play throughout the night.

“We played one of our most competitive matches on the season tonight,” said Ives. ” My girls served well, and my front row seemed to play well whomever we had up there.”

Set No. 2 had great serving by both teams. There were no scoring runs of more than three points either way, as it was a tightly contested set all the way through. Sydney Honkala, who had four aces on the night, along with Megan Bucek stood out for FP in the set with their serving. It was Alaska Peterson’s serving and strong net play by Aspen Fredrick and Kassidy Roll that paced BR-H.

A 4-0 run to open up set No. 3 for FP, was powered by the serving of Caitlyn Bloomburg, and consecutive kills by Mercedes Simmons, whose 19 kills led the Trojans on the evening. BR-H evened up the score at 6-6, with the net play of Peterson, Makena Lockwood and Alexis Berg, and the serving of Cara Zawacki.

Forest Park took the lead and extended the score to 12-8, but with the Broncos pecking away at the FP lead, the scoreboard soon read 16-15 in favor of the visiting team. The seesaw action continued seeing FP take back the lead at 23-19, going on to win the set.

The final set began in almost the same fashion as the third set did, with the Trojans Bloomburg and Simmons leading the way with strong serving and strong net play respectively. With the score knotted at 9-9, the Trojans took a 10-9 lead, before BR-H went on their longest scoring run of the match.

Behind the strong serving of Berg, BR-H went on a five-point run to take the lead. FP kept the set score close, seeing the serving of Bucek and Honkala as the main factor. A 22-20 Broncos lead wasn’t enough though, as the Trojans came back and won the set, clinching the match win.

Ives and Valesano both also noted that having such a competitive match right before districts, was to the advantage of both teams.

The Broncos travel to Norway on Monday night to begin Division 3 district play, with a 6 p.m. Central time start scheduled. Forest Park, assigned to a Division 4 district, is off until Wednesday to await traveling to the winner of Monday’s Carney-Nadeau at North Central matchup. A 6 p.m. start time is scheduled for that matchup as well.

The JV match was exciting, and also won by the home team, 2-1 (24-26, 25-23, 20-18).
