IM’s McGuire, KHS’s Standish dominate mats

KINGSFORD — Escanaba and Marquette each took down Iron Mountain and Kingsford at a wrestling meet Tuesday.

Escanaba knocked off Iron Mountain 48-18 and Kingsford 50-17. Marquette won 52-41 against Kingsford and 60-24 against IM.

“Overall I am happy how we wrestled in both duals,” Iron Mountain head coach Cory McLaren noted. “We came in with four starters unable to go, and that hurts. We will keep grinding and will improve each week.”

Shawn McGuire (119 pounds) had two wins for Iron Mountain.

McGuire pinned Esky’s Trevor Degrand in the third period, and worked a second-period pin of Marquette’s Payton Holstrom.

Kingsford’s Ben Standish works against Marquette’s Brendan Bell. Standish pinned Bell in the 215-pound match.

Isaac Manier and Parker Stroud also notched two victories.

Manier, wrestling at 135 pounds against Esky, won a decision over Brock Viau with a last-second takedown and near fall in an 11-8 comeback. His Marquette win came via forfeit.

Stroud won a 5-4 decision over Escanaba’s Collin Sent.

“These two have a history and wrestled each other in the U.P. finals with Stroud winning in the final seconds,” McLaren said. “This was no different with Stroud scoring a third period escape in the final minute to win the match.”

Stroud also took a forfeit win against Marquette.

Even Haferkorn (125) pinned Escanaba’s Adam Reimer in the second for another IM win.

At 171 pounds, Bradon Farragh pinned Marquette’s Riley Dickerson in the first.

Kingsford’s Ben Standish worked two victories for the Flivvers. He pinned Brendan Bell of Marquette in less than a minute in a 215-pound match, then he moved up to heavyweight against Esky and was victorious.

“He offered to move up to heavyweight with the confidence that he’d win,” Flivvers head coach Darren Groleau said.

Toby Wilcox, up against tough competition nearly every match so far this season, went 1-1. He posted a win at 145 pounds but lost a decision in a 152-pound match.

“Toby seems to end up having to face state ranked wrestlers, no matter what tournament or match we go to,” Groleau said. “Our team is young, but we had kids step up. Our 140-152 pound kids had to wrestle some tough wrestlers from both Marquette and Escanaba.”

Matt Kelcec also went 1-1 for Kingsford, wrestling 119 pounds.

Iron Mountain hosts Negaunee, Gladstone and Marquette in another quadrangular tonight. It will be held inside the Central Middle School Gym in Iron Mountain at 5 p.m.

Kingsford travels to Bark River-Harris this evening.

Starting at $3.50/week.
