IRON MOUNTAIN — With the exception of two returning players and the same head coach, the Iron Mountain Mountaineers girls basketball team will have a practically new identity this season.

Head coach Katelynn Grenier says the program will be rebuilding with the loss of all five starters and a total of seven graduating seniors.

Tori Sorensen and Reagan Lundholm are the returning letter winners from last year. Grenier notes the graduation losses to be Riley Poupore, Saylor Swartout, Hanna Ellis, Faith Bal, Holly Diercks, Jorden Stoner and Emma Thomann.

“We are rebuilding as a program this year with girls who have been working hard and stepping up,” she said. “I would describe my team as go getters, they never give up and always do their best.

“We are young, but scrappy, and our goal is to get better every practice and every game. I am doing my best to keep the girls focused on one game at a time.”

Also new to the program this year is JV coach Karen Ellis.

“I am happy to welcome Karen Ellis as my JV coach this season,” Grenier said. “She has had a positive impact on the program, and we are both excited to get the season started.”

Last year, IM finished with an overall record of 7-13, with a 4-8 mark in the MPC and finishing 2-7 in the West PAC.

The Mountaineers begin the season tonight when they host West PAC Conference foe Calumet. On Tuesday, Dec. 10, they travel to West Iron for another West PAC game. IM will have dual membership in both the West PAC and Mid Peninsula Conference’s again this season for basketball.
