Trojans hold off Flivvs

CRYSTAL FALLS — Forest Park withstood a late rally by Kingsford to pull out a 42-39 win in non-conference girls basketball Friday.

Mercedes Simmons led the Trojans with 15 points and 20 rebounds and Sydney Honkala also scored 15.

“Our girls played great defense tonight,” said Forest Park coach Kim Bjork. “They did a great job communicating and played with a lot of heart.”

Olivia Olkkonen paced the Flivvers with 11 points.

“Simmons is quite a presence inside,” said Kingsford coach Lisa Harry. “It’s hard not to alter your shot when she is in the paint, but we finally generated some offense in the fourth quarter to make it an exciting game.”

Maggie Strehlow added eight points for the Flivvers, who trailed 34-22 entering the fourth quarter.

“We started creating some turnovers and making some shots, which was encouraging,” Harry said. “Honkala hit a couple big shots and some free throws at the end to seal the deal.”

Bjork credited Simmons for being instrumental in breaking Kingsford’s press.

“This win will definitely be a stepping stone for us moving forward,” she said.

Kingsford JVs won 56-12.

The Flivvers (1-3) are at Gladstone on Tuesday. Forest Park (1-3) travels to Norway on Thursday.
