Hematites slip by Mountaineers, 45-41

ISHPEMING — In what was a closely contested girls basketball game, Ishpeming slipped past Iron Mountain, 45-41, Thursday night in Mid-Peninsula Conference action.

Reagan Lundholm and Claire Mongrain combined for 32 points, with Lundholm netting a game-high 19 for Iron Mountain.

“We were ready to play but came up a little short to a good team,” Mountaineers head coach Katelynn Grenier said. “We rebounded well, we shot the ball well and we played good defense.”

The Hematites, who led 21-15 at halftime, committed only seven turnovers on the night, while the Mountaineers had 10.

“It was a game of runs, they would make one, and then we would,” Ishpeming head coach Ryan Reichel said. “I was proud of the way our girls off the bench played. (Tia) Mattila and (Rebekah) Loman came in and provided so much energy for us and that helped propel us.”

Lundholm played awesome, as he and his team have come to expect, Reichel noted.

“I’m glad we survived their runs,” he said. “In the second quarter, we were forced to use Koski with two fouls because of her abilities to make plays and that got us going. She came in with fire and it helped lead us to a win.

“I thought Iron Mountain made good adjustments throughout the game, to stop the little runs we made,” Reichel said.

“Small things like missing free throws and bunnies make a big difference down the stretch. Reagan Lundholm and Claire Mongrain played with great spark tonight. They also both shot the ball really well,” Grenier said.

Iron Mountain next faces No. 2-ranked Westwood.

“We will have to be ready to move quickly and play four solid quarters against them,” Grenier said.

The Mountaineers (1-8) travel back to Marquette County on Monday to face the Patriots. Ishpeming remains home to face the West Iron County Wykons on the same night.

In the jayvee game, Ishpeming defeated IM, 44-27. The Mountaineers were led by Chloe Maycroft with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Anja Kleiman snared 12 rebounds as well in the losing effort.
